Norah's spent the last two Thursday mornings at a nature-themed play group at one of our parks. One of the park department's naturalists leads a little group of two-year olds around the park and teaches them about plants/animals/etc. As you can imagine, it's fun to be a mom and tail along behind the group, listening...
Teacher Emily (pointing to the tree's bark): Does anyone know what this part of the tree is? Here's a hint: it's the sound a dog makes!
Kid: Woof?
Teacher Pete: Do you guys see those ducks? That kind of duck is a wood duck.
Norah: Um, that's actually a real duck.
Teacher Pete: Can you guys see any geese on the lake?
All the kids: No one so much as lifts a head because they are fascinated with looking for goose poop on the ground.
