The Mexican Patient

Date: Thu, 3 Sep 2009 4:08 PM

We just got home after being in the hospital a bit longer than we'd expected but everything went well and Oliver's camped out on the couch "watching tennis" (mostly just sleeping!)

The surgeon was able to do everything they had hoped - the meniscus tear was on the exterior portion, so they didn't have to cut it away; instead they stitched it back together and hopefully it will heal itself completely. They were able to successfully remove the screws from the prior surgery and the bone structure was intact so no need for a bone graft. The new ACL went in smoothly and they got him all bandaged back up.

The surgery itself took just under 4 hours and recovery was a bit of a struggle - the anesthesiologist put a lot of painkiller into his femoral block at the end so that he'd be comfortable at home tonight and all the drugs made him pretty groggy. It was a little more than three hours before he felt able to get into the wheelchair and try moving around.

So, all in all, very successful and **hopefully** the last time I have to learn the details of knee anatomy!
